Stem borer

Stem borer

Symptoms of damage:

1. The larvae of the borers enter the tiller, feed, grow and cause the characteristic symptoms of ‘dead hearts’ or ‘white ears’ depending on the crop stage.

2. At tillering stage, the feeding frequently results in severing the apical parts of the plant from the base.

Rice stemborer

1. The larvae of these insects bore into the stem and cause damage from July to October.

2. The affected young plants show dead-hearts (yellowing and drying of central shoot) whereas the old ones produce empty earheads which turn white and stand erect.

Management of Paddy stemborer ( Thandu thulaippan)

• Resistant varieties: Ratna, Jaya, TKM 6.

• Avoid close planting and continuous water stagnation.

 • Pull out and destroy the affected tillers.

 • Set up light traps to attract and kill the moths.

 • Harvest the crop upto the ground level and disturb the stubbles .

• Release the egg parasitoid, Trichogramma japonicum on twice @ 5 cc/ha/ (followed by monocrotophos 36 SL spray thrice @ 1000 ml/ha on 58, 65 and 72 DAT).

Management of Rice stem borer (Tana bedhak)

In Nursery: In 10 - 12 days nursery plant, apply Carbofuran 3G @ 250 gm, or Forate 10G @100 gm per 100 m2 nursery area.

Roughing: Tillers showing dead hearts should be removed and their destruction must be outside the field, it reduces the infestation.

Biological control: Use 8 Trichochord (Bio-agent Trichogramma) three times (total 24 in numbers), at one week interval just after one month of transplanting for one hectare.

Chemical control: Cartop Hydrochloride 4G @ 20 kg/ha is found to be highly effective in controlling the insect populations.
