Reproductive phase of rice plant

Reproductive phase includes Panicle Initiation, Booting, Heading and Flowering stages.

Stage 3 - Stem elongation of rice plant

1. This stage begins before panicle initiation or it occurs during the latter part of the tillering stage. Thus, there may be an overlap of stages 2 and 3.

2. The tillers continue to increase in number and height, with no appreciable senescence of leaves noticeable. Ground cover and canopy formation by the growing plants have advanced.

Stage 2 - Tillering of rice plant

1. This stage extends from the appearance of the first tiller to the maximum tiller number is reached.

2. Tillers emerge from the auxiliary buds of the nodes from main stem or other tillers and displace the leaf as they grow and develop.

Stage 1 - Seedling of rice plant

1. The seedling stage starts right after emergence and lasts until just before the first tiller appears. During this stage, seminal roots and up to five leaves develop.

2. As the seedling continues to grow after the first Prophyll leaf, two more leaves develop. Leaves continue to develop at the rate of 1 every 3-4 days during the early stage.

Stage 0 - Germination to Emergence of rice plant

 1. Germination is defined as the appearance of white tip coleoptile and subsequent growth of it.

2. Seeds are pre-germinated after soaking for 24 hours and incubating for another 24 hours, after pre-germinate the radicle and plumule protrudes through the hull (sprouting).

Growth Phases of rice plant

The growth of the rice plant is divided into three phases:

1. Vegetative (germination to panicle initiation);

2. Reproductive (panicle initiation to flowering);

3. Ripening (flowering to grain maturity)

Fruit or Caryopsis of rice

1.    The rice fruit is a caryopsis with a single seed fused to the ripened ovary wall, pericarp.
2.    Lemma and palea enclose the caryopsis.
3.    The rice grain is the ripened ovary with lemma, palea, rachilla and sterile lemmas.
4.    The rice grain is also known as rough rice.
5.    The lemma, palea, sterile lemmas, rachilla and the awn constitute the hull or husk.

Rice Leaf

1.    The mature leaf has four main parts: the sheath, blade, ligule, and auricles. The leaf varies in length, form,  tightness, and covers the stem.
2.    These mature leaves are flat and vary in length and width according to variety and cultivation practices.
3.    The collar is the junction of sheath and blade. The swollen zone at the sheath base where it joins the culm is the pulvinus.

Suitable Season for Hybrid Rice Cultivation

1. Rice hybrids can be grown both in kharif as well as rabi seasons.
2. The long duration hybrids should not be cultivated during rabi season and even for medium duration hybrids.
3. Care should be taken to see that plantings are not delayed, otherwise the flowering may coincide with high temperatures in April/May, thus adversely affecting yields.
