Question : What is the source for obtaining seed material of parental lines?
Answer :

Seed material of the parental lines of public sector bred hybrids can be obtained from the research center / agency responsible for development of hybrid.

Question : Why there are problems in obtaining synchronization of parental lines ? How to over come these problems?
Answer :

Male and female parental lines of most of the hybrids differ for there days too flowering by few days to almost 20-25 days. This difference in flowering also vary from season to season, location to location and from year to year. Because of these unpredictable regional and climatic variations, there are problems in obtaining proper synchronization of flowering of parental lines. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to meticulously record the data on flowering of parental lines at new locations/ seasons in pilot studies and accordingly plan for large scale seed production.

Question : When to perform supplementary pollination? How many times a day?
Answer :

Supplementary pollination is recommended from 9.00AM to 12.00noon at the time of peak anthesis, 4-5 times a day for a period of 7-10 days. If temperatures are higher, supplementary pollination can be started early around 8.00AM and if temperatures are lower and weather is cloudy, it is started after 10.00AM. The best time to start the first supplementary pollination is 30 minutes after the dehiscence of 5-6 spikelets in the panicles of male parent.

Question : What is supplemental pollination and how it is to be done?
Answer :

Rice is a self pollinated crop and after anther dehiscence, there is no natural Mechanism for release and wider distribution of pollengrains unlike in the cross pollinated crops. Hence for wider distribution of pollen grains for effective pollination of CMS lines in seed production plots, the panicles of male parent at the time of anthesis are shaken mechanically. This is called supplementary pollination. It is done by vigorously shaking the panicles of male rows at the time of anthesis either with the bamboo sticks or with the help of rope held at both ends.

Question : Why GA3 is used in hybrid seed production?
Answer :

It is used for better exertion of panicles in female lines GA3 application also helps in better exertion of stigma, wider opening of glumes and higher seed set.

Question : Why hybrids are not cultivated on large scale in Southern India?
Answer :

In South India the consumer preference is for medium slender grains with out aroma like sambamahsuri. Most of the present day hybrids have long slender grains with aroma and bit sticky when cooked. Because of these reasons hybrids have not become popular in South India. In the recent past , few hybrids with desirable attributes have been released (DRRH 3, 27PO4, US 312 etc.,). If seed of such hybrids are made available, there is a scope for increase of hybrid area.

Question : Can the harvested seed from hybrid rice be used again for planting next crop?
Answer :

No, Every season, farmers have to purchase fresh f1 hybrid seed for growing the crop of hybrid rice. The high yielding potential of hybrids is expressed in first generation only. If the seed from hybrid crop is used again for replanting, there will be lot of variation in the crop due to segregation and yield is reduced drastically.

Question : What is hybrid rice?
Answer :

Hybrid rice is the first generation (F1)crop grown from the seed obtained by crossing two genetically different rice varieties. Hybrids give 1-1.5/ha., extra yield compared to high yielding varieties.

Question : Name the rice hybrid released by Haryana Agricultural University?
Answer :

Haryana Shankar Dhan-1

Question : What is the ideal time of sowing for hybrid paddy?
Answer :

Hybrids can be grown during the month of July 2nd week and August 1st week. If the transplanting is done after August hybrid varieties are exposed to cold injuries and finally yield level will be decreased.
