Question : Can i use the seed harvested from commercial plot for growing next crop in hybrids?
Answer :

No, we should not use the seeds harvested from commercial hybrid plots for cultivation in the next season. We should always use fresh hybrid (F1) seeds purchased from research stations or market.

Question : Quantity of yield obtained per ha in paddy?
Answer :

Grain yield per ha is 65 - 70 quintals in high yielding varieties with good agronomic practices. Yield level of hybrids are more compared to varieties it is 75 - 80 quintals per ha.

Question : What are the specific plant protection measures to be adopted in cultivating hybrid rice crop ?
Answer :

There are no specific plant protection measures to be adopted for raising a successful hybrid rice crop. The same plant protection measures, as adopted for high yielding varieties, are to be followed in hybrids also.

Question : Whether hybrids are more susceptible to pests and diseases as compared to the varieties ?
Answer :

No, The level of resistance or susceptibility to pests and diseases in hybrids is similar to that in case of high yielding varieties. The incidence of pests and diseases in hybrids is same as in high yielding varieties.

Question : What is the expected profit in hybrid seed production ?
Answer :

The average seed yields obtained in hybrid rice seed production are in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 tons per hectare. At the procurement price of Rs. 30/- to Rs. 40/- per kg., the gross income works out to Rs. 45,000 to 80,000/- per ha. The average cost of hybrid rice seed production is around 25,000 per hectare. Hence the net profit ranges from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 55,000/- per hectare depending upon the seed yields obtained and the price offered for hybrid seed.

Question : What is the potential employment generation of hybrid rice seed production ?
Answer :

Hybrid rice seed production activity generates additional employment of about 80-100 person days/ha, mostly for women labour required for operations such as planting, roguing, leaf clipping, supplementary pollination and harvesting.

During rabi 2004, hybrid rice seed production has been taken up in an area of about 3500 hectares. The total additional employment potential created is estimated to range from 2,80,000 to 3,50,000 person days.

Question : From where farmers can get the hybrid seed ?
Answer :

Farmers can get the hybrid seed in their villages itself or nearby towns through the traders who deal in selling of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides and seed. In case they are unable to obtain the seed through the above mentioned sources, they may contact some of the leading seed companies mentioned below which are dealing with hybrid rice seed.

The leading private sector seed companies selling hybrid rice seed are;

1. Pro-Agro seed company, Hyderabad.

2. PHI Seeds Ltd., Hyderabad.

3. Mahyco Seed Company, Jalna/Mumbai.

4. Advanta India Ltd., Bangalore.

5. Indo-American Hybrid Seed Co., Hyderabad.

6. Nath Seed Company, Aurangabad.

7. J.K. Seeds Ltd., Hyderabad.

8. Shriram Bioseed Ltd., Hyderabad.

9. Parry Monsanto India Ltd., Hyderabad.

10. Emergent Genetics India Ltd., Hyderabad.

In addition the state seed corporations such as Maharashtra state seed corporation and Karnataka state seed corporation are also producing hybrid seed in a limited way.

Question : What is the source for obtaining seed material of parental lines ?
Answer :

Seed material of the parental lines of public sector bred hybrids can be obtained from the research centres/agency responsible for development of hybrid.

Question : How to reduce the cost of hybrid seed ?
Answer :

Cost of hybrid seed can be reduced by increasing the seed yields and reducing the input cost. All the recommended package of practices need to be adopted meticulously. After obtaining proper synchronization of the parental lines, supplementary pollination at peak anthesis is the key for obtaining high seed yields. Cost of inputs can be reduced by using GA in combination with cheaper chemicals like NAA.

Question : What are the major factors affecting hybrid seed yield ?
Answer :

Major factors affecting seed yield are;

1. Season/location of seed production.

2. Synchronization of flowering of parental lines.

3. Effective and timely supplementary pollination.

4. Proper dose and timely application of GA.

5. Appropriate agronomical management of seed production crop.

6. Weather conditions such as temperature, wind velocity, rainfall at the time of pollination etc.

7. Experience of the seed growers.
