Brown spot

Causal organism: Helminthosporium oryzae

Symptoms:

1. Many dark brown elliptical spots on leaves; infects coleoptiles of seedling and causes blightining; infected kernel shriveled.

Management

1. Seed treatment before sowing with carbandazim (2.5g/kg).

2. Treatment with fungicide like mancozeb 0.25% or Adinophos 0.1%.

Brown leaf spot (Drechslera oryzae)

1. It produces oval, eye-shaped spots with a conspicuous dark-brown spot in the centre and light brown margin.

2. The support is surrounded by yellow halo. Spots are also produced in the grains. This disease occurs in poor soils, therefore, give adequate and nutrition to the crop.

3. To control the disease, give two sprays of Tilt 25 EC (propiconazole) @ 200ml or Indofil Z-78 (zineb) @500g in 200 litres of water/acre.

Brown Spot disease

Symptoms:

The disease is caused by Helminthosporium oryzae. It produces oval dark brown spots on leaves and plumes.
The disease occurs mostly in deficient and P90r soils and when severe, causes heavy damage both in nursery and in the field.
Management of brown spot:

Correction of soil deficiency and application of balanced nutrition reduces the disease

Mode of Spread and Survival of Brown Leaf Spot of Rice

1. The infected seeds are the most common source of primary infection. The conidia present on infected grain and mycelium in the infected tissue may viable for 2 to 3 years.

2. The fungus may survive in the soil for 28 months at 30OC and 5 months at 35OC. Airborne conidia infect the plants both in nursery and in main field.

3. Maximum flight of conidia take place at a wind velocity of 4.0 - 8.8 hr. Minimum temperature of 27 -28OC, Relative humidity of 90-99% and rainfall of 0.4 -14.4 mm favored the dispersal of the conidia to maximum extent.

Pathogen of Brown Leaf Spot of Rice

Helminthosporium oryzae (Syn : Drechslera oryzae) (Sexual stage : Cochliobolus miyabeanus).

1. H. oryzae produces greyish-brown to dark brown septate mycelium. Conidiophores may arise singly or in small groups.

2. They are straight, sometime geniculate, pale to brown in colour.

3. Conidia are usually curved with a bulge in the centre and tapering towards the ends occasionally almost straight, pale olive green to golden brown colour and are 6-14 septate.

Control Measures for Rice Brown leaf spot

Cultural practices to control Brown leaf spot:

1. Use disease free seeds for sowing.

2. Do not use high nitrogenous fertilizer.

3. Use resistant variety Amruth.

Chemical control of Brown leaf spot:

4. If the disease observed in the field than spray 2g mancozeb or 2.25g Zineb in 1liter of water.

Damage symptoms of Brown leaf spot

1. The symptoms of the disease appear on the coleoptile, the leaves, leaf sheath and also the glumes.

2. On the leaves the spots vary in size (1cm) and shape from minute dots to circular, eye shaped or oval spots is seen in the central portion.

3. The seeds are some times shriveled and discolored.

Brown leaf spot

1. Causal organism: Helminthosporium oryzae.

2. Local name:

3. Brown spot is a fungal disease that can infect both seedlings and mature plants. This disease is more severe in areas of poor management.

4. Major cause of 'Bengal Famine' in 1942, due to yield loss of 50-90%, resulting in death of 2 m people.

Control Measures of Brown Leaf Spot disease in Karnataka

Control Measures of Brown Leaf Spot disease include use of resistant varieties, Cultural and Chemical control measures.

Varietal resistance: IET 1791 and Amruth varieties were found resistant to brown spot disease. Varietal mixtures can also be used to reduce slow disease spread.

Seed treatment: Carbendazim @ 2 g /kg of seeds or mancozeb @ 4 g / kg of seed.
